How do I join the Band and/or Choir?
To join the RBSMS Bulldog Band or Choir, you just need to mark it on your course card with a #1. That’s it!
Where can I find more information about the benefits of the band?
If you need more information about the RBSMS Bulldog Band, just contact Mr. Schmidt. Every student can be part of the band!
Can my student choose their own instrument?
Students definitely have a huge say in what instrument they’ll play! We want them to be excited about their new instrument choice. They’ll need that motivation to rise to the challenges of learning to play. Outside of student preference, we also look at fit and ensemble need. By fit, we mean to analyze if a student’s physiology and natural musical skill suites their instrument choice. Mouth shape, lip size, finger, arm, and torso length, even personality all factor into whether a student will succeed on an instrument.
Every student will have an opportunity to try each instrument! During the first few weeks of school students will get to try the Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, and Percussion. It’s important that students enter the instrument fitting process with an open mind. They may hope to play a specific instrument but may realize that there is something else that interests them.
From here, we consider ensemble need. Obviously, a band of drummers and saxophones alone would never work! Students will select their three favorite instruments. From those three, Mr. Schmidt will select the one he thinks suits them best. Most of the time, students are assigned their first or second choice. Remember, the key is to keep an open mind.
We already own an instrument. Can my student just play that?
While it might seem like a great idea to reuse an instrument in your closet, I would urge you to keep an open mind when selecting an instrument. Remember, when choosing an instrument it’s important to consider the instrument fit in addition to price. At the end of the selection, you’ll want to speak to Mr. Schmidt about if this instrument will work for you.
Does the school provide our instruments?
The school does have a number of instruments available for students. Unfortunately, we do not have enough for every student. The school is usually able to provide the following instruments:
- French Horn
Families issued a school-owned instrument will need to complete an Instrument Checkout Form. School instruments are issued for free, but you may have to purchase your own mouthpiece. There are a limited number of smaller instruments reserved for families who cannot afford to rent an instrument.
Can I be in both Band and Sports?
Absolutely! We have many students involved in both band and sports.
Most of our activities take place during the school day, although there are activities that take place in the afternoon or evening. We post all of our upcoming events and activities on our band website (rbsmsband.com), Facebook, Twitter and we send out flyers. If you ever have a question or concern, just contact Mr. Schmidt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What about Band and PE?
As a member of the band, you won’t have to take PE in middle school or high school…unless you want to. As a 6th grader, you’d have the opportunity to take Beginning Band. As you move 7th and 8th grade, you’ll be able to take Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Chorus, and more…. Remember, as a 7th and 8th-grade student you’ll get up to 2 electives!
