Band Instruments and Supplies

Any student with school instruments at home need to get them brought in immediately. The Beginners are about to get their instruments, and we need every school instrument. If there are extra’s after the beginners are taken care of, we’ll discuss letting some of you keep them at home. Until then, get them back to school.

We’re in our third week of school now….. everybody should have supplies and working instruments. If you don’t, please take care of it ASAP. We need everyone playing and working. There’s a lot of music stores in the area, please visit one to get caught up.

If you have any questions, contact me immediately.

Beginning Band: Instrument Selection

It’s time to choose our instruments in Beginning Band! Here are a few things to remember….

  1. This is your first instrument, not your last. It’s important to understand that this is just the first instrument you’re learning. You will learn more over time….probably even before you leave RBSMS.
  2. It’s a family thing – It’s important to discuss your instrument selections as a family. The students who have involved parents/guardians are far more likely to be successful than those without.
  3. Choose what’s best for you – Just because an instrument is cool, it doesn’t mean it’s for you. You will be more successful choosing an instrument that fit you well during testing. Remember, you are picking your first instrument…not your last.
  4. Think of the Band – Not everybody can play the same instrument. We need every instrument covered by someone. Some instruments only need a couple of people.

The students and I have spent a lot of time talking about our band’s instrumentation (the number of students on each instrument). Here’s our goal:

    • Flute – 10 Students
    • Clarinet – 16 Students
    • Saxophone – 4-5 Students
    • Trumpet – 12 Students
    • Horn – 6 Students
    • Trombone – 10+ Students
    • Euphonium – 6 Students
    • Tuba – 6 Students
    • Percussion – 10 Students

Remember, if you are unsure what to pick….pick Clarinet! Clarinet is a great instrument, and allows students some flexibility as they improve and grow.

If your student misplaced the Instrument Selection Form, you can download it here.

Lastly, don’t forget about our Parent Night on September 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the RBSMS Cafeteria. We will discuss supplies, instruments, how to shop for band stuff, and more….  If you have any questions/concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Remind101

About 2 years ago we began using Remind101 to help keep our students and their families informed. Since then, our lists have grown and are now out-of-date, and need to be updated. The easiest way to update them is to clear out all of our subscribers and then resubscribe to the correct group list. I have cleared out all of the lists (except for our Band Boosters). We need you to resubscribe to the correct group(s).  You can join as many of these groups as you’d like.

Band Boosters - This groups is only for our band parents/guardians. We need all of our families to be in this group. It allows us to message all of our families at once. We use this to remind you about meetings, letters home, performances, rehearsals and more. I did not clear this group out…..which means you don’t need to resubscribe if your already in it. To join, text @rbsmsband to (442) 333-4526.

Concert and Symphonic Band - This group is meant for students and parents of the Concert and Symphonic Bands. We use this group to remind students of deadlines, uniforms, performances, rehearsals and more…. To join, text @rbsmsbands to (442) 333-4526.

Beginning Band - This group is meant for our students and parents of the Beginning Band. We use this group to remind you of forms, uniforms, practicing, performances, rehearsals and more…. To join, text @practicing to (442) 333-4526.

Jazz Ensemble - This group is meant for our students and parents in the Jazz Ensemble. We use this group to remind you of forms, uniforms, call times, performances, rehearsals and more….. To join, text @jazzen to (442) 333-4526.

Percussion Camp

The RBSMS Percussion Camp will begin on Monday, July 28th and will end on July 31st. It will take place in the Zephyrhills High School Band Hall from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Be sure to bring any music/sticks that you have. Your drums will already be at ZHS. During the camp you will learn to play a few cadences, get some practice time, and will learn to march with the ZHS Drumline. It’s essential that our drumline (all percussion students in Symphonic or Concert Band) attend this camp. This is where we will decided which students will play which marching equipment (Snare Drum, Bass Drum, and Cymbals).

Remember, Percussion Camp is FREE! We look forward to seeing everyone then. If you have any questions, please contact me immediately.
